On site at Wheal Jane, the fine summer enabled us to make good progress in many areas of our restoration, landscaping and planting. Our ongoing efforts to protect and enhance the wildlife environment in various parts of the site have taken a major step forward recently with the signing of an agreement with the Cornwall Butterfly and Moth Society (CBMS).

This voluntary organisation whose aim is to protect and enhance the butterfly and moth population of Cornwall have identified an isolated part of the site as an excellent habitat and one which, with further management, could be suitable for the introduction of new species.

The area, which was formally home to the mine’s explosives storage bunkers, was cleared of those structures at the time of the mine’s closure, and the area has been slowly, naturally regenerating as part of the long-term landscape development plan for the site. The area, covering approximately three acres, will now be managed by the Group and designated as an area protected for the benefit of these species.
