We were delighted to host Colonel Edward Bolitho, Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall, and a number of his deputies for a presentation and tour of Wheal Jane in 2012. The Colonel’s strong family connection to mining in Cornwall was of particular interest, and the Colonel was pleased to learn more about the site’s history and see the ongoing transformation of the site.
It was an honour to welcome the Colonel to the site again last month, this time escorting HRH Prince Edward the Duke of Kent who came to officially open our latest development project.
The Duke toured the upgraded and extended headworks building where he was introduced to staff in various companies engaged in everything from mining surveys to tin jewellery production and mineral analysis to the restoration of historic mining artefacts.
HRH spent an hour on site, also taking the opportunity to view ongoing restoration and landscaping work, as well as seeing how our Cornish tin jewellery is made and talking to junior cyclists from the One and All Cycling Academy (pictured above right) who use the Wheal Jane site at weekends for training.HRH was presented with a Cornish tin coin set charting the history of Cornish mining (pictured above left), and rounded off his visit by unveiling a plaque in the new reception area to mark his visit and the completion of the project (pictured centre).
The completion of this project has provided new and upgraded high-quality workspace and facilities for five separate businesses and a new reception for the Wheal Jane Group, as well as cyclist and disabled facilities.
