Although Wheal Jane has been here for many years, we still get asked what we do. The Wheal Jane site has quite a lot going on. Outside of Waste Management and Recycling, there are many successful businesses that rent buildings throughout the site, most of which are associated with the mining industry, not only locally, but all around the world.

The Wheal Jane site also houses the first commercial solar farm to be built in the UK, which has been successfully adding carbon-free energy to the grid for many years. The Coal Authority, funded by DEFRA, has their Mine Water Treatment Plant here managed by John F Hunt, and treats hundreds of thousands of gallons of polluted mine water from the old workings, and introduces the clean treated water back into the river system. Wheal Jane then accepts the waste from the mine water treatment, and deposits it safely into specially formed lagoons on the top surface of the Tailings Dam. This is an extremely important pollution prevention project, which we are very proud to be an integral part of.

Furthermore, Wheal Jane Waste and Recycling accepts various construction, concrete, and demolition wastes from sites as small as single dwelling developments right up to large scale housing and commercial developments, which form a part of our recycling operation. Our bespoke permit from the Environment Agency allows us to accept both inert, non-hazardous materials as well as certain hazardous soils impacted with naturally occurring heavy metals, which are found throughout Cornwall and into Devon. In the last few years, we have also welcomed UK Remediation to the site, who opened a Hazardous Soil Treatment Facility. As our partners, they allow us to accept other hazardous soils for treatment, such as hydrocarbon and asbestos-impacted soils, and once the soils have been treated to a level that meets our strict permitted levels, the material can then be deposited with us on-site.

It is worth noting that all materials that are deposited at Wheal Jane Waste and Recycling are considered recovered, we are not a landfill or disposal facility. All materials are reused for the purpose of either land remediation or recycling, which is used to create top-quality recycled aggregate, available at very competitive prices. This is an important tick on any development’s waste management plan. To encourage more recycling, we offer discounted rates for materials that can be used in the production of our recycled aggregates.
